Text Box: A CD ALBUM OF SONGS AND CHORUSES FROM THE SHOW IS AVAILABLE (see Links).

A brand new musical for amateur companies, Dream is an uplifting tale of lovers, fantasy and comedy based on one of Shakespeare’s favourite plays.

It was specially commissioned by the Three Counties Musical Society and features all the characters of A Midsummer Night’s Dream—although their antics have been considerably brought up-to-date.  While Shakespeare’s original begins with the wedding of Theseus and Hippolyta, Dream commences with their stag night and hen party!

Dream was written by Robert Wilsmore, the Society’s MD from 1991-2000.  It had its premiere at The Guildhall Theatre, Derby, in November 1998 and was declared “a triumphant success”.  It has since been taken up and performed by other companies, and Three Counties responded to audience pressure to

repeat the show in Long Eaton, Nottingham, in May 2000.  Phrases like “a fantasy of music and comedy” and “a dream of a Dream” were used by the

press.

The music has much in common with West End productions, but many people find this show more fun because there’s scope for more people to participate and enjoy themselves.  Apart from a

large cast of major principals, the chorus are involved throughout, and in the play for the wedding—Pyramus and Thisby—parts are written for yet more minor principals.  The songs are many and varied - solos, ensembles and four-part harmony choruses, some with foot-tapping rhythms and others tender and romantic—and these are linked by the occasional dialogue.  There’s plenty of fun for everyone!  As our Chairman remarked at the time, “… the most fun we’ve ever had in rehearsals”.

Dream was a milestone in Three Counties history—a couple of years many of us  remember fondly as, perhaps, “our finest hour”!
