Three Counties Musical Society

On Saturday 13th June 2015, the Three Counties Musical Society was presented with a special award at a ceremony in Loughborough Town Hall.

NODA - The National Operatic and Dramatic Association - East Midlands Region (covering some five or six counties) was presenting awards for amateur theatrical productions staged in the year 2014. Like BAFTA and similar award ceremonies, trophies were awarded for many and varied categories, recognising both personal contributions and whole-group achievements. NODA represents dramatic societies (plays) as well as musical theatre groups of several genres. A special award was made this year to the Three Counties Musical Society for two outstanding concerts. This was unusual, as concerts very rarely figure in the awards list.

The Three Counties Musical Society is a local group which has, since 1989, been performing biannually at The Duchess Theatre in Long Eaton both fully-staged Gilbert & Sullivan operas (or similar) and concerts of a varied nature. The productions which had particularly impressed the judges were their May 2014 concert entitled A Time to Remember, commemorating the outbreak of World War 1, and their November 2014 offering of The Best of Gilbert & Sullivan, featuring music from four of the duo's best-loved operas, semi-staged in a novel way.

The production team chiefly responsible for both performances were Gordon Frearson (Musical Director), Colin Marsh (Producer) and the very talented accompanist Gwyneth Rees. The November presentation was accompanied also by Naomi Turner on 'cello and Bryan Clarke on percussion. Special lighting effects by Simon Birchall certainly enhanced the entertainment on both occasions.

Eric Brook, the Founder of the Society and its ongoing Chairman, was at Loughborough to receive the trophy on behalf of 3Cs.

This very amicable Society meets every Thursday evening in Shardlow Village Hall. The group is commencing rehearsals now for its Spring 2016 production. New members are always welcome, and anyone interested should visit or telephone Eric on 01509 673936.
